Workshop 019 Solar Panel Puzzle
How does one attach panels to the roof of a trailer? Well, that's the question I aim to find out in this video. Yes, I had attached these to the top of my live-aboard boat once before, but this is a new challenge. And I want to share the thought process with you.

Workshop 018 Drunk Measurements
Просмотров 6 тыс.День назад
I am not advocating drinking in any way. It's bad, m'kay? All I'm saying is, whenever I have a few brews and turn off the camera, things seem to flow very nicely. Perhaps it was just the fact that on my second attempt I had gained the experience needed to make better cuts. Or maybe, JUST MAYBE, there is some mysterious powers within the ingredients of my malt beverages that bring clarity. I'm n...

From a very early age I've always had a problem with perfection. Problem is, I often dream up and try to achieve that unicorn and as a consequence, I wind up constantly disappointed. Add to that my propensity to overthink things and you get what you see in this episode. While I am pondering some elaborate idea that might be all well and good, I overlook some simple measurement that I should've ...
2024 Hurricane Season Preparation

If the lights go out, can you charge your phone? Storm season is here and it's predicted to be an active one. For a quarter century I have lived in Florida which gets hit by 40% of all named storms. I've dealt with the after effects of these wind events from a house, a boat and a trailer. After I moved out of the house I learned to appreciate every drop of water and every watt of electricity. I...
Workshop 016 Shelf Struggles
Просмотров 6 тыс.21 день назад
Form without function is a waste of time. In this episode, my long awaited shelves seem to fight their birth, perhaps because I really wanted a particular form to take shape and part of that design didn't serve much practical purpose and the rest seemed nigh impossible to make look good. I am a patient guy though and can wait until the solution presents itself. And sometimes that unfortunately ...
Workshop 015 A Fair Curve
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.28 дней назад
Finally! From paper to reality. It was good to see the curves of the roof truss gussets come to life. Their grain was tight and resinous and soaked with whatever horrible chemical they use to treat lumber under pressure. This was definitely not my favorite part of the workshop build so far. But it will certainly be the defining characteristic of the entire project. Follow me on: Facebook - face...

If storage or portage is a problem for anyone who wants to fish and own their own kayak, this could be the trick. The Wilderness iATAK 110 is very impressive for an inflatable. I have shown it on the water before, but that's not the only place this vessel shines. I figured I'd show the behind the scenes part that often goes unshared. Deflating and folding up this portable fishing machine deserv...
Workshop 013 Starting the Workbench

The heart of any good shop lies upon and within the tabletop or bench. I have mentioned before how a goal of mine is to use this shop's main, vertical space as a place for active jobs only. That perhaps comes from filming so often in the past years. I have trained myself not to use the sd card in the camera as storage. It took a long time to build that skill of data management. Nowadays, I am u...

Once in a great while, a project gets a hold of my interest so much, that I find that I roll out of bed with extra enthusiasm. The days end too quickly. Not even a tweaked back could prevent me from pushing forward. My mobile workshop has turned i...

When you're starting from scratch, it's a good idea to think things through. Before you ever drive that first nail, twist a screw, cut a board, etc. you must have a plan or else you are likely to regret it later. It's ok to amend your vision as you go, but dang if it's not just plain silly to set off for the store if you don't have directions or already know the way. Am I right? I can think of ...

Some projects I work on feel like skiing down a mountainside. You have to adjust to the curves and dips as they come to you. Yet, I still get on the lift thinking that I can somehow imagine all the twists and turns before I even see them. Perhaps that is the grand idea. Envision your goal. And bend to the currents that fight too hard. As a boater and a kayaker, I have found myself in a pickle o...

As this project matures, there are more and more things to deal with. And they're all connected. I can't do this without that. But that can't be done until you finish this. Etc. A place for everything. And everything in it's place. That makes it so you can find stuff when you need it. As is, the new shop is a disaster. That is as expected I guess since the new space is still getting put together. But this chaos will not do for very long before my eyes start to twitch. So, I put up some shelves and hung some stuff up. I did this knowing that eventually it would all have...

Nice bit of progress Marty. Surprised you didn't think of lying a couple of 1ft wide lengths of plywood down the middle of the roof so that you could get up there to do the inner bolt holes? You aren't very heavy, and the roof rails plus the timber would have supported your weight. Keep 'em coming - stay safe & well. 👍👍

Hello Marty! 👋 hope all is well! So far this project is coming along nicely. I have a question regarding installing your solar panels-instead of just using brackets why not install plywood or similar, onto the roof and mount the panels on the plywood panels? It would stiffen up the roof and give you a mountable surface to mount all the panels and wiring etc you need up top?

I'm more partial to using uni-strut for mounting solar. You can use two runners down the edges of the truck and then you can remove panels on and off without having to ever punch a new hole into the roof.

Marty I know this is from "the past" but if you ever need to do anything of the sort in the future here are few pointers: #1 With a see through roof like that... night time... turn light on inside the trailer... it will shine where beams are and you just mark them on both side of the beam. #2 magnet. Even on aluminum trusses there are still bits and bobs that are magnetic. Having mounted solar on all of my trailers... that is my go to. I take a magnet and BAM. It allows me to locate even over TPO/UPDM and luane roofs in RVs. #3 good old chalk string. Upon marking and drilling outer holes, you just bzing the darn thing and it will allow you to mark entire truss across the roof.

👍👍👍👍👍 I was gonna make a couple of comments, but you said you took those solar panels off of your boat so my second comment flew out the window because I was gonna suggest that you get you should’ve gotten the flat panels that stick to your roof, but doesn’t matter now my first comment was you know you can walk on those roof, they are designed to walk on a retired truck driver of 35 years and I’ve been in a lot of trailer shops with those roofs and the guys walk all over them so just for future knowledge you can walk on your roof of that.

probably too late now, but something I have always considered in mobile solar mounting, is to use U-channel starting the mount system using the U-Channel as a roof rack like you see on many vehicles. Kinda like this: ruclips.net/video/UY98-WQ0VTw/видео.htmlsi=dU-OFyEFOtNNzG1R

Make your short piece up on the side. Come through bolt it to the sidewall. Stick it up above of unistrut hook. Another piece of unistrut to it going all the way across there you go, you got it. My, can you do that all the way down? You can put as much stuff up there as you want, and you can even put. Walkways, or anything else you want? You can make a little deck up there if you want unistrut would hold everything

Very interesting Marty, 2 solar panels should arrive today, not sure if they are going on the house, or on the electrified pedal boat that I made, sorta similar to one that you made back in the day. I made that boat before I saw your video, but that project is what led me to your channel & I've followed your journeys ever since. Friend has a pod-like work trailer I might buy from him to try to make a 4 season survival pod, might put them on that as well. Electricity is vastly too costly here in NH. Hoping you go into some of the details of working with solar systems.

@RoofAndAMeal4UsAll Solar energy is great and interesting to experiment with. I'm across the pond and wanted some LED lighting in the back yard without having to run cables and use power. 2x 20 watt solar panels, a charge controller, and 2x big 2nd hand Deep Cycle batteries, and it works great. Also got a cheap Chinese light sensitive switch from eBay, so they come on at dusk, and go off at dawn. Must be about 8 years ago I did it, and haven't had to touch them since. Very reliable.
